The Futurliner dash needs
total restoration. The photos below were actually taken from other Futurliners in better
condition and help to point out what we're missing. Many of the restoration volunteers
have taken components home to work on in the comfort of their own workshops. Jeff Miller is working on the dash and has a number
of questions which he needs answered. If you have any parts or information, please send
him an e-mail.
Questions are:
- How did the directional (turn) signals operate? Momentary pushbutton or toggle with
flasher unit.
- Were the back-up lights automatic or manual?
- Were the inner and outer headlamps switched separately?
- Were all 14 toggles used?
- Did the START button still operate, and was it on the floor or the dash?
- What protruded from the hole in the left side panel of the dash?
|
Mounted on the dash is this "Autronic
Eye". I'll guess that it was for dimming the headlights for oncoming traffic? We need
to obtain one of these. If you have any information for us, please pass it on to Jeff. |
|
The red arrow points
out a side-switch panel with two on/off toggle switches and a push/pull switch in the
middle that is missing from our Futurliner. The question is, are these for heating, air
conditioning, fuel pump and, if so, which is which? If you can help us with the switch,
let Jeff know. |
These switches are all
unlabeled and it would be helpful to know exactly what they powered, in their correct
order. The far left and right are what Jeff refers to as "button outboard".
There are are total of 14 switches, 7 on each side of the steering wheel that need to be
identified. |
In this picture, Jeff is inquiring, or looking for
conformation, as to the function of these particular knobs, selectors. Again, if you can
help out, please send him an e-mail.
(2/22/00 -- Ed Harben, a former Parader, responds with the following: The three
floor-buttons on the floor are for the air horn, upper and lower headlight beams and an
override switch for the Autronic Eye. All the passenger cars that we had on the Parade in
1953 were equipped with this device. One undesirable affect was to pull up to a flashing
caution light and the headlights would respond by getting synchronized with the flashing
signal lights. There is a sensitivity control to alleviate this situation and if my memory
serves me correctly, the control was on the "Eye" itself.) |
