RELOCATING THE FUTURLINER TO ZEELAND, MI
November
1998 the Futurliner is transported from NATMUS in Auburn, Indiana to Don Mayton's pole
barn in Zeeland, Michigan. |
The Futurliner makes its way down the country road leading to Don Mayton's pole barn in
Zeeland, Michigan. (For point of reference, it's West of Grand Rapids.) |
The Futurliner appears to be
precariously perched atop this flatbed trailer. The wheels rest on the outside edge of the
trailer bed. |
The Futurliner is carefully rolled off
the trailer, onto the country roadway. It had to be backed down a rather long
driveway due to a lack of maneuvering room once it got to the pole barn. |
A tractor tries tugging at
the Futurliner.
Notice the front wheels lifting off the ground as it tries pulling at a bit of an angle. |
The Futurliner is being pushed into
its stall on the end of Don's workshop. As of February 2000, a larger and to-be-heated
pole barn is being built to the left of this building. |
It's a tight fit and some are
beginning to wonder if this is going work at all. |
|
The picture
to the left shows Don applauding the fact that the Futurliner is finally parked in the
stall. What we haven't shown in pictures, is the fact that they tried about a half-dozen
times before they could get the behemoth in straight. During the earlier, warmer, restoration months the Futurliner was pulled outside
so the men had enough room to work on it. By the time the cold winter months rolled around
it was pretty much stripped. Originally, the pole barn was unheated but in the Spring of
2000 a large heated addition was erected that provides both elbow room and protection from
the cold Michigan winds. |
