All went well for about a mile or so and then all of a sudden one of
the front wheels came off and rolled past the Futurliner into the
ditch. There was no damage to the wheel well.
|
The tire lays well off the road with the white wall facing up.
|
The men right the tire and contemplate how to get it out of the
ditch.
|
A tow rope is hooked up to a pickup and the tire is pulled up to the
road. It's far to heavy for the men to move it by hand.
|
Out of the ditch, the tire is righted and lifted into the back of
the pickup.
|
What happened? Why did the wheel fall off? Twelve large lug nuts
held it on. Were they loose? How did they loosen? A lot of head
scratching went on with no good answers.
|
A jack is used to raise the Futurliner to check the remaining wheel.
With duals on the front, at least it didn't come crashing down on
the road when the wheel came off.
|
While the remaining tire is checked out to make sure the journey
back to the pole barn is uneventful, one of the volunteers takes an
opportunity to smile and ham it up for the camera. Next week the
Futurliner has to be ready for it's trip (via trailer) to Eyes on
Design in Detroit.
